Do you believe Ex-Trump Chief-Of-Staff, Former-General John Kelly’s account that former President Donald Trump repeatedly praised Hitler?
- Yes
- No
Republican candidates in the region are ignoring or refusing to answer questions aimed at shocking reporting from multiple outlets that former President Donald Trump admires Adolf Hitler and wanted generals like his.
The revelations came to light during The New York Times' three-session interview with retired four-star Marine General John Kelly and Trump’s former White House chief of staff.
During the interview, Kelly told The Times that he had personally witnessed Trump make complimentary statements about the former dictator, even saying that Hitler had done “some good things.”
Kelly went on to tell the outlet that Trump fit the general definition of a fascist and "would govern like a dictator."
In a report in The Atlantic, two sources said that Trump once said, “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had,” in a private conversation in the White House.
Trump is also facing a severe backlash from Democrats and voters after saying he may on stage during rallies he would use the National Guard or even the military on his domestic rivals and calling them “the enemy from within."
Since Kelly's revelations, most Republicans running for office have avoided the press when asked questions about the statements.
In the Capital Region and Hudson Valley, incumbent 19th District Republican Representative Marc Molinaro, in a tight race with Democrat Josh Riley, who is leading by four percentage points, has dodged questions on the topic.
District 19 includes Broome, Chenango, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Greene, Sullivan, Tioga, Tompkins counties and parts of Otsego, Rensselaer, and Ulster counties.
Multiple attempts to reach Molinaro for comment have been ignored or answered by unnamed spokespeople who also avoid the subject, calling them "alleged comments."
His opponent, Josh Riley, said: “No one who praises Hitler or enables those who do belongs anywhere near public office. Period.”
